UMF CONCERT BAND
Anita-Ann Jerosch, Director
THE CONCERT:
Spring 2006 Concert will be on Saturday April 8th at 7:30pm.
REHEARSALS:
Rehearsals take place at Nordica Auditorium, Thursdays 7:00pm – 9:30pm. We follow the UMF academic calendar. The first rehearsal of the Spring 2006 semester is January 19th. New members are welcome!
MISSION:
The UMF Concert Band serves the students at the University of Maine at Farmington as well as community members and local high school students. Our goal is to continuously improve on our individual playing as well as our ensemble playing. We perform a variety of standard concert band repertoire chosen from our library as well as a few new pieces each semester. The band plays a combination of grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 repertoire with most of the music for each concert being in the 4 or 5 range. I welcome repertoire suggestions from students as well as community members.
JOINING:
There is not a formal audition to be a member of the band but you must have the ability to read music and a desire to be part of a fun group of musicians. Seating auditions will take place on the first rehearsal of the fall semester. Seating auditions are not required but if you don’t audition, you will sit where I think you are needed the most.
CREDIT:
UMF students are encouraged to register for band for credit. You can register for band every semester that you attend UMF. Grading policies as well as other useful information will be found on Blackboard (UMaine course web pages). UMF students are also encouraged to be an active member of the band in more ways than just being a good musician. There are committees for concert and rehearsal set-up, library work, fund-raising and travel (we’d like to attend a festival in the near future).
INSTRUMENTS:
UMF owns a few band instruments that can be loaned (free of charge) out to members of the band that do not own an instrument. Please contact me if you played in high school but do not have access to an instrument. If we do not have that instrument at UMF, I have other resources for instrument loans and will try to help you out. You will be responsible for maintaining the instrument in good working order and you will be required to purchase your own accessories (i.e. valve oil, reeds, neck strap). Brass players needing a loaned instrument are encouraged to purchase their own mouthpiece. I can provide guidance with sizes, brands etc..

CANCELATION DUE TO WEATHER:
If UMF cancels we will not meet. Check the following for school closures:
UMF switchboard: 778-7000, WUMF (100.5FM), WKTJ – Farmington (99.3FM), WMME –Augusta (92.3FM), WTOS – Skowhegan (105.1FM), WCSH-TV – Channel 6-Portland, MaineToday.com.
If UMF is open and the roads are icy, please make your own decision as whether or not to travel. You will not be penalized for not driving to rehearsal on bad road conditions. (UMF students living in dorms can walk…… :) It hasn’t happened yet but there is always the possibility that UMF will be open but the roads down here in the midcoast region will be bad. I will make phone calls as well as send out emails (if I have power) if I am canceling rehearsal.
